Writer of Swades, Ayan Mukherjee as a debutant director in Wake Up Sid has truly made one of the best entries in this year’s Bollywood’s list of film releases. Though the writing or script is not fully matured and lacks the depth that is needed to create the perfect impact, but still the movie keeps up its own pace giving its full justice to Ayan’s writing and directing. The rich production of Karan Johar along with the perfect star cast of Ranbir Kappor and Konkona Sen Sharma forms the main strength of the film. Though the narration is completely predictable, the audiences do not tend to get bored and the bittersweet loving moments that Sid shares along with his Mom are worth a watch.

Moreover, Anil Mehta’s charming art direction inside the magazine’s office and Konkona’s cutely decorated small apartment add up nicely to the atmosphere of the movie. Also, Shankar Ehsaan Loy’s and Amit Trivedi’s music catches up perfectly with the smooth flow of the film that’s starts up featuring Sidharth Mehra, (Ranbir Kapoor) as a blemished son of a rich family in Mumbai, who sleeps all the way through studying for his final exams and ends up failing them. His father (Anupam Kher) offers him a job, but Sid quits it within a week leading to a conflict between his father, mother (Supriya Pathak) and his friends. Left out by his family, Sid is enforced to stay off from his house, without money. Luckily for him, he meets up Aisha Bannerjee (Konkona Sen Sharma) at his graduation day party and stays back inside her flat on a ‘just friends’ agreement basis. Just arrived from Kolkata, Aisha dreams of becoming a professional writer and acquires an editorial assistant job at a Mumbai Magazine. Later, she finds a position as a photography intern in her office for Sid, who realizes his responsibilities and finds out his identity. Sid also resolves the matters with his family and shifts back into his house. In the meantime, Aisha falls in love with Sid and is upset. Sid realizes that he loves her after reading her article printed in their magazine. In the end, they have a happy ending on the Marine Drive with a romantic early monsoon shower.

Ranbir Kapoor has been perfect as a least-bothered, good-for-nothing college boy. Konkona Sen Sharma looked a bit out-of-sorts and lacked the spark that she is normally associated with, throughout the movie. Rahul Khanna’s character as a strict and demanding boss looks delightful, but it could have been explored more. Anupam Kher fits perfectly in his role as papa and Supriya Pathak has acted fantastically as the actor’s mother.

Overall, the movie is not a great fun but a worth watch.
